Why Philanthropy is Essential

How Giving Tuesday Supports Our Mission

Philanthropy plays a vital role in sustaining and empowering nonprofit organizations. For organizations like Boundless, which provides essential support for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) and behavioral health needs, donor contributions are not just appreciated—they are critical. Philanthropy fuels programs and services that might otherwise be unattainable due to limited state or federal funding. It also ensures these services can grow, innovate and reach more individuals and families in need.

Nonprofits like Boundless rely on donations to help fulfill their mission. While government grants and service fees cover some operational costs, they often don’t stretch far enough to address all community needs. Donations allow Boundless to expand its reach and quality of care. Contributions from compassionate supporters enable the organization to improve its facilities, provide specialized training for staff, and create programs tailored to the unique needs of the people it serves.

“Philanthropy can have a big impact on our programs by allowing for innovative ideas that might not be possible without donor support,” explained Carrie Burson, director of individual giving at Boundless. For example, while necessities are covered for individuals living in Supported Living homes or an Intermediate Care Facility (ICF), funds for something as simple as a birthday celebration are not guaranteed. Donations to those programs can make a huge difference in the lives of our individuals.

Contributions enable Boundless to offer more therapeutic support, inclusive social activities and access to necessary resources for individuals who might otherwise lack access. Philanthropy allows nonprofits to innovate, giving them the flexibility to pilot new services and pursue creative solutions that government funds may not cover. This support system ensures organizations like Boundless can deliver not just assistance, but truly meaningful care.

Giving Tuesday, launched in 2012, is a global movement encouraging charitable donations and acts of kindness during the holiday season. Created by the 92nd Street Y in New York City and the United Nations Foundation, Giving Tuesday falls on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving. It’s strategically timed after the shopping frenzies of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, offering a meaningful opportunity to give back.

“I think it is a good reminder to think of others this time of year,” Burson said.

The movement has grown exponentially since its inception, inspiring individuals and corporations alike to prioritize generosity. Giving Tuesday highlights the power of collective impact; on this day, millions of people around the world contribute to causes they care about, from local nonprofits to global charities. In 2023 alone, Giving Tuesday raised billions in donations across participating countries, benefiting countless nonprofits and spreading awareness of the issues they address.

For Boundless, Giving Tuesday provides another opportunity to connect with donors who want to make a difference. It allows many nonprofit organizations, including Boundless, to be more visible in their communities.

“Boundless does amazing work every day and the more visible we are, the more people will know about the great work we do. That also helps puts us top of mind when people are deciding which nonprofits to support,” Burson said.

Donations have a ripple effect, enabling Boundless to enhance its services and provide resources that directly impact the lives of the people we serve. But philanthropy can also have an impact on the donors themselves.

Burson, an active philanthropist herself, wishes people knew how good it can feel to support a cause you believe in. “I have never regretted giving to causes I feel passionate about,” she added.

Whether through a small gift or a larger contribution, donations made on Giving Tuesday and every day have lasting effects. They sustain the organizations’ missions year-round and support efforts to build a more inclusive, compassionate society for all.

This Giving Tuesday, supporting Boundless means contributing to a future where individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities receive the compassionate, dedicated care they deserve.
